Media Convergence: Tools From a Journalist’s Backpack
One cohesive story told through photos, videos, audio and copywriting.
During my years in a newsroom, my colleagues and I worked hard to deliver complex information in comprehensive but straightforward reports to our audiences.
We knew that each medium – video, photo, audio and print – excelled in translating a particular type of data into a consumable package. So, we brought our newsroom’s disparate departments together. Experts in print journalism, photojournalism, video journalism and radio production contributed to every project in a practice called “convergence journalism.”
The result was a staggering improvement in the depth and breadth of our reportage, and our audience responded. Engagement improved – not just with our content, but within the community we were serving.
Our journalism had translated into civic action.
I knew we’d uncovered something valuable. So, I took that lesson and built upon it.
Testing the Waters
In 2018, I partnered with a South Sudanese non-governmental organization (NGO) to produce a multimedia documentary.
The NGO hoped to receive timely, versatile content that it could use in its humanitarian campaigns.
Below, you’ll find a trailer, modified for this website, promoting the project’s video component, “CAMP15.”
WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT
The project was an instant success.
Both the NGO’s board of directors and the public received it warmly, and the project’s messaging made waves among Afrocentric non-profits.
I had, I felt, demonstrated that the methodologies my colleagues and I had practiced in the newsroom could work just as well – if not better – when targeting a specific audience.
Going Corporate
After discovering the world of B2B marketing, I’ve found a niche that feels like home. Over the past few years, I’ve continued to build on my learnings while refining my processes to excel in this unique field.
Now, I have a proven, repeatable model that:
- Establishes thought leadership
- Drives organic engagement
- Produces modular, evergreen content
I co-founded PartnerTalks, which grew into an award-winning multimedia franchise.
In 2023, PartnerTalks served as the media sponsor for DynamicsCon Live, a premier conference held in Scottsdale, AZ. The event focused on Dynamics GP, Power Platform, and the Dynamics 365 suite of products.
